Abstract
The article discusses the potential effects of the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) on Catholic hospitals in the U.S. due to its responsibility to follow both civil and canon law. Several legislatures that highlight the conscious clause, such as the 1973 Church Amendment, 2004 Weldon Amendment, and the Health and Human Services (HHS) Refusal Rule, are pointed out. It traces the history of Catholic hospitals in the U.S. and Catholic Church's views on health care provision.
