Chapter 4
An academic lawyer writing in the early years of the twenty-first century and hoping to productively engage and intelligently assess “American Conservative Thought and Politics” should be forgiven for struggling with the unanticipated difficulty of the question, “what, exactly, are we talking about?”3 In my own case, this difficulty can be chalked up at least in part to a lack of formal training or advanced study in American history and political thought, but that is not the whole of it. The question is difficult, the subject is elusive. The former will probably not be definitively and comprehensively answered, nor the latter pinned down, by a law professor.
